Monday, August 17th, 2009Realising that there’s been a sizeable absence of bodies in my recent drawings, either through avoidance or lack of awareness (likely both), I decided to rectify the problem, starting with this picture. Well, it actually started a bit earlier with the Hot Fuzz image, and perhaps even the Burn Notice one, but this marks the beginning of deliberately trying to draw bodies again without a photo reference. Ok, there’s some referencing involved from Loomis’ figure drawing book but I took the poses and played with them a bit, rather than straight copied. The point is I doing something new with my drawing, which is good, right?
It’s always good to learn.
As with yesterday’s image, today’s is one appropriately reflecting a day of drawing.

I spent the day finishing the image above. Accordingly the photo of the day reflects this.

The Ninth of August, 2009
Thursday, August 13th, 2009Had a chance to draw on some real cardboard, instead of a digital substitute. It didn’t lend itself too well to drawing; it worked decently, but the surface was too smooth and glossy to make any impact with the coloured pencils (Admittedly it actually looks really rough in the image below – you’ll just have to take my word for it). Oh well. It was still an interesting experiment. I’ll have to find some rougher cardboard to try out next time.
I actually brought out an entire box to draw on with the intention of decorating its entire surface, but it became too cold outside so I retreated. The box now sits in my room, waiting patiently for its turn. Having learned from the cardboard endeavour above the box will likely be coloured exclusively in black and white. Well, black anyway. I have a feeling at least one of the sides will be dedicated solely to giving the box a face.

The Eighth of August: Part Ein – Redux
Sunday, August 9th, 2009After I posted the previous picture I realised that it was a bit cross eyed, so later that eve (last night, before stumbling off bleary eyed to bed) I decided to fix it up a bit. I corrected (I hope) the cross eyed look, and slightly increased the size of the eyes as well; the picture looks much healthier for it.
It’s difficult to say – the whole cross-eyed thing. I think there’s elements of it there, but on the other hand it’s fairly true to the original source image wherein she’s looking at something close and as a result that brings her eyes together naturally. It’s certainly better than it was, anyway.

The Seventh of August, 2009: Part Uno

The little sun down the bottom is, to my mind, a fairly accurate representation of the real sun and its intent as I sat beneath it today. Like one of the Beamos statues from Zelda it followed me wherever I sat with a gaze that projected a scorching beam of aggression. It’s truly not the smiley faced friend in the sky as portrayed in so many children’s drawings.
I just wanted to sit outside in the warm, fresh air – damn you Sun! (Though a damned Sun would probably be hotter than Hell itself)

The Sixth of August, 2009: Part Deux
Friday, August 7th, 2009As promised here is Part Deux and in it the photo for the day:
It was largely a day spent drawing. If I wasn’t drawing I was watching Damages or Burn Notice. I only intended to watch the one episode of Damages (episode six or seven, I think) but it ended with such a hook that I had to immediately put on the next episode. As is the case with most episodes of Damages, it seems.
Burn Notice is also totally rockin’. I like this wave of smart spies in the wake of the Bourne movies. Instead of leaving the cinema wishing you had access to all sorts of gadgets you now leave wishing you were only that bit smarter, that bit quicker, then you too could dazzle foes and go on epic adventures. Why have clever gadgets when you can turn everyday objects into weapons of death or deception?

Anyway, there’s a bonus to this Part Deux. After my previous post I developed a hankering to do some more drawing. And so I did. There’s a taste of the drawing in the photo above, but just for you I’ve attached a crisper, clearer copy straight from the original digital source.
