A thing I saw the other day…

Monday, November 8th, 2010

…at South Bank. I turned up as the performer was getting his equipment together to juggle on his cycle. As he got ready he addressed the crowd and apologised for some kids off to the side. There were about five of them, none of them more than nine or ten years old, and they scowled back at him. I’m guessing they’d been harassing him the entire performance. As he apologised one of them — with the most wonderfully petulant, bogan grimace — gave him the finger and the image burned into my mind. It was so horribly hilarious. It’s amazing how tough some kids believe they are; I’m twenty two and I don’t even know where to begin when I comes to toughness.

I don’t think I quite captured the kid’s scowl, try as I might. It was the sort of face made of anger and resentment that only the young can do, apparently sucking all of their baby fat into a controlled black hole somewhere in the vicinity of their nose.

I’ve designed it in the hope of making it into a shirt for myself someday. Hopefully it’s the start of many more.

A Thing a Day – the Follow up

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Ha ha, that didn’t take long. Just one drawing so far, the one bit of writing for the introduction, and two photos (neither of which I’ve uploaded). I like to think things should be done spectacularly – succeed spectacularly, or fail spectacularly. I think I achieved the latter by forgetting all about this within a day of starting.  I’m not sure what I’ll do next – either let that set a precedent for the rest of the endeavour, or restart tomorrow. Ah well. We’ll see.

A Thing a Day, 2010/2011 Edition

Friday, July 9th, 2010

So here I am again. I’m starting another attempt to take one photo a day for a year. And to do one drawing a day for a year.

I didn’t make it particularly far last time (though it did feel like it). Hopefully I’ll do a little better this time around. I won’t be so near as picky this time: if I miss a day, week, or month (or even a year), then so be it – it’s not game over, man, game over! It’s not going to so much rules as guidelines and considering that I hope to do it over a year, I think that’s fine. Yes, there’s something romantic about the notion of performing exactly day in, day out for a year, but I don’t know if it’s any less romantic to do it more casually (it’s certainly more practical), to embrace the fun of it, rather than enforced tedium.

Anyway, to spice things up a bit, I’ll also be attempting to write one thing a day. It doesn’t matter what that one thing is – it could be a story, or it could be a journal entry, or it could be just rambling about the lack of updates re: Breaking Bad’s third season on iTunes. Anything will do, and I think that will give it flavour. Hopefully. It’s certainly an easier undertaking than my one story every two weeks idea I had last year. I don’t think even the first story was completed (though, long afterwards, I did realise how it should be written).

All three of these – the writing, the drawing, the photography – are perhaps things I should be doing anyway, but we humans are strange, strange creatures, and sometimes it takes putting things into a certain context of structure or challenge before we’ll see the value in doing them.

Would it be cheating if I decided this piece would count as my bit of writing for the day? I don’t know. Maybe. But then this is my undertaking, my rules – well, guidelines – so it’s my choice. So we’ll see.

To make things slightly more organised and official, I’ll point out – largely for myself – that the starting day for this whole, crazy endeavour, is Friday, the 9th of July, 2010. It will end on whichever weekday the 9th of July, 2011 finds itself on. I could look it up, but why spoil the (minuscule) surprise? Also, I have a feeling the 9th of July – at least in America – is the release date of a major movie. But I’m not sure which. I could be making things up or I could look it up, but, again, I’m not going to spoil the surprise.

So. Here goes. Starting…now.

Oh, and here’s a picture I prepared earlier today:

A rough sketch of the Eleventh Doctor, that came about when I realised the head (and hair) I was drawing vaguely resembled Matt Smith.

All the Strange, Strange Creatures

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

One of the reasons I like living in the city again – in one day I can think ‘I need a USB hub’ and ‘I’d really like a Tardis’ and by day’s end I can have something that delightfully resolves both desires.

The city continued to provide-
-I also had my cravings for Michael Palin’s 19 disc adventure set (50% off!) and a copy of the Princess Bride novel satiated.

Also, I applied for a few jobs. We shall see how that goes. I saw a new iMac with a gloriously sized screen – once I’m working again it will be awfully tempting. I mean, editing on that thing. And drawing.
I want to go to there.

Also, also – watched Breaking Bad’s third episode of its third season. I love this show. Even when it becomes incredibly bleak it’s still a joy to watch. It truly is greater than the sum of its parts; and each part – the writing, the acting, the music, the directing – is pretty damn great.

I’m going to go watch the fourth episode now.

And then presumably the fifth, sixth, seventh, etc, until I have to endure the week long wait for the next arrival on iTunes.

The video section is finally finished…

Friday, June 4th, 2010

…after a year under construction. I won’t pretend that it was actively under construction during that time, or that any effort was put into at all until today. How quickly things can change.

There’s four videos currently, with more to come in the future – and I’ll be upfront: the next videos might be a while. I’ll put them up when I can, but that might be any time.
Anyway.
My stalwart portfolio video is there, as are two timelapse videos. The other is my entry for Empire’s Done in 60 Seconds competition earlier in the year – it’s a minute long remake of The Road Warrior (or Mad Max 2, depending on what you prefer), featuring cars, motorbikes, gyro copters, feral kids wearing garbage bags, a villains with a colander masks, and much abused gyro captains.
I’ve spent the afternoon attempting to embed the video for your convenience on the front page here – right in this post – but, frustratingly, I haven’t been able to get it to work. Still, if you’re interested it is but one click away in the video section.

And hopefully this marks the beginning of more attention being lavished on this website. I’ve maintained that it would always get more investment as soon as I had access to better internet – and now I do.
I hope drawings and photos will flow more frequently, and I also hope to contribute more writing to the site; not just the self-referential and slightly mad kind, but – hopefully – fleshed out thoughts and articles. I want to improve as a writer, and I think this website is the perfect piece of exercise equipment for achieving that.

Another shipment of books from the Amazon(.com) arrived today, and I watched Unforgiven, because Clint Eastwood is great:

The Ninth of August, 2009

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Had a chance to draw on some real cardboard, instead of a digital substitute. It didn’t lend itself too well to drawing; it worked decently, but the surface was too smooth and glossy to make any impact with the coloured pencils (Admittedly it actually looks really rough in the image below – you’ll just have to take my word for it). Oh well. It was still an interesting experiment. I’ll have to find some rougher cardboard to try out next time.

I actually brought out an entire box to draw on with the intention of decorating its entire surface, but it became too cold outside so I retreated. The box now sits in my room, waiting patiently for its turn. Having learned from the cardboard endeavour above the box will likely be coloured exclusively in black and white. Well, black anyway. I have a feeling at least one of the sides will be dedicated solely to giving the box a face.

And here are the photos of the day:

The Eighth of August: Part Zwei

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

What comes after Ein? Zwei!
09_08_08
I couldn’t quite get this photo to work; the exposure was all over the place, it was only ever a picture of ‘hey look, that plant’s interesting’ and I figured I’d get a better picture of something else later in the day. Only I didn’t. Instead I did some more drawing (as ever) and watched Burn Notice and Damages.

I don’t mind it now, though. It’s like mini fireworks, in plant form.

The Fifth of August, 2009

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Inspired by Stephen Silver’s books I’ve decided to play around with different mediums when drawing. With no brown paper on hand I created a digital substitute:

I spent the afternoon quite contentedly drawing outside in the warm sun. I love that Winter is beginning to turn; the days are warmer, and longer; the sky is richer; and the air is fresher, filled with the early scents of plants getting ready for Spring. It marks the beginning of the time of year where I can sit outside and it’s not too hot, nor too cold. In the words of Goldilocks it’s just right. Fortunately (I hope) there won’t be any bears after me for having experienced it.

Here, then, is a picture of my afternoon endeavours :

29th July, 2009

Especially for you, here are two pages of sketches from this day, the 29th of July, 2009:

And here we have the photo of the day. It is of a box! And what a condition it is in! Fortunately the books inside were protected with a layer of plastic. I guess being sent half-way around the world takes its toll. You can rest easy now, Box.
